Liberty Memorial - Kansas City, Missouri

This is the only national museum to honor those who gave their lives in WWI.

Dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in 1926, it was intended to be the only monument to world conflict, but that distinction was not to last as World War II began just 13 years later in 1939. After a major restoration was completed in 2002, the new WWI Museum opened in December 2006.

Liberty Memorial uses highly-interactive technology to bring history to life, and to foster timely discussions of ethics, values, decision making and conflict resolution.

The Museum actively collects objects and documents from all the belligerent countries in World War I. They are especially looking for German U-boat uniforms and other items.

Department of the Interior, Secretary Dirk Kempthorne designated the Liberty Memorial a national historic landmark in recognition of its role in memorializing World War I service as well as its notable design. The " The Liberty Memorial in Kansas City is one of the most compelling monuments constructed in honor of those who gave their lives in World War I," Kempthorne noted. "Its beautiful monument and museum complex exemplifies visionary city planning and architectural innovations of the early 20th century."
