3rd Friday Art Walk – Independence, MO

The Englewood Arts & Entertainment District of Independence, Missouri is a growing collection of art galleries, and businesses that feature art, together holding an “open house” to the public the 3rd Friday of each month. Along Winner Road, from Sterling to Northern are the following: B-Vogue (A Paul Mitchell Hair Salon) hangs multiple framed art pieces each month for their customer’s enjoyment from art walk to art walk, and entertains with the artist on-site or a community-driven cause.

Three Trails Trading Post has recently joined the walk, and features artisan crafting from their storefront… bead-making and wood carving artists engage their audiences each 3rd Friday. Green Dog Gallery, named a “living gallery” as the 9 current artists each rent studio space on half the building, and show their stuff on the gallery side daily, then “put on the dog” for Art Walk nights! Across Winner Road is Puppetry Arts Institute – fair weather could bring any number of puppets (of any size!) from their building into the streets for walk-abouts or stage performances.

Frick Electronics has opened Frick Modern Art Gallery in their storefront lobby (upper and lower) and features a rotating venue of 2D and 3D artists focused on modern stylings. Winner Road Gallery features 12 local traditional-styled artists in a intimate gallery setting. Stone Bridge Coffee House offers their guests visual and musical entertainment on a regular schedule, even hosts several artists who just create on-site and hang out for coffee! The Changing Seasons Floral and Gift Shop has recently added a solo artist, and offers many artistic keepsakes and gifts.

The newly opened Russ Lawrence Gallery is a collection of the artist’s watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings, along with his pottery and other artforms. Newest to the offerings is West End Gallery – a group of artists displaying a variety of painting, photography, graphite and other strong, traditonal media.

  1. I was poking around and found this article on the Englewood Art Walk. I am pleased to see such wonderful detail in the article regarding the different venues. Thank you for taking the time to truly describe the galleries and their differences without writing a three page essay about each gallery. Some articles that mention the 3rd Friday Art Walk are very vague and do not offer a breakdown of what you can expect.

There have been some new additions and some shops that joined the art movement. There is a new bakery that shows artwork and the Tanning salon has been renovated and is taking part by hanging artwork. In May there were around 12 printmaking students from the Kansas City Art Institute presenting their work at the Boxcar Gallery, which is located where Changing Seasons was before it was relocated up the block. Stonebridge Coffeehouse has had its name changed and is under new ownership but still chugging along with the same great atmosphere of music, art, and quite a bit more food selection. Unfortunately, West End Gallery had to close their doors but some of the artists were absorbed into other galleries.

There is a bistro in the works at the building that was formally Sermon & Anderson interior design. Last but not least, the city has been working on a sidewalk renovation project that could enhance the functionality and aesthetics without drastically altering the historic feel of this block. I am especially eager to see this project come to fruition, since I live six houses down from Winner Rd. on Harvard.

We are starting to see and meet people from some interesting places. I attribute this to word of mouth and to website posts like this one. I look forward to the changes and I really feel this will be an attraction for Independence to not only locals but to those who visit from all over. I believe I speak for the majority of artists in this community when I say we appreciate your kind words.

    Sincerely,

    Michael Taylor
