Mark Twain Cave - Hannibal, Missouri
The Mark Twain Cave near Hannibal, Missouri was discovered in the Winter of 1819-1820 when a man named Jack Sims was hunting and his dog chased an animal into a small opening.
The Mark Twain Cave is also the oldest show cave in the state of Missouri, giving tours for over 114 years. The cave has also served as a place of hiding for Indians, trappers of animals for trade, the infamous Jesse James and slaves searching for freedom via the Underground Railroad.
Experienced guides will escort you on the 55 minute tour of Mark Twain Cave where the walkways are level and smooth and there are no steps. Because of the natural state of our cave (narrow passages, etc.) it is not wheelchair accessible.
The cave stays a constant 52 degrees year round.
Cameron Cave is a 1 hour and 20 minute tour and several people will carry lanterns as the cave is very nearly like it was first discovered in 1925.
For more family fun, we have a daily one man show in our Cave Hollow Theatre featuring Jim Waddell as Mark Twain.
He does a great show full of wit and wisdom!
We are accessible via US Highways 24 & 36 from the West, US Highway 61 or State Highway 79 from the North and South, and I-72 from the East.
