What to Consider Before Purchasing Educational Software

There are several considerations in the purchase of educational software. The following factors are intended as guidelines only, but help you analyze important factors before you buy.

These aren't placed in any particular order, but make sure you think about your responses to each of these carefully prior to getting any educational software. Your learning success and software enjoyment will benefit from any research you do before you make your purchase.

  • Computer Requirements: Will the software run with your system? A good educational software will list the system requirements your computer needs in order to run the program well. Make sure you look over this part carefully.
  • Will it keep the user's interest? Search for software that is self-paced featuring an interactive storybook or cartoon character
  • Price: Is the product priced right? Look at other web pages to get get a feel for prices as well as shipping costs. Note such features as no sales tax states and discounted shipping.
  • Availability: If possible, determine if the merchandise is available right away. Find out about the shipping options. Are you able to download the product immediately?
  • Does it fit the learning style of the user? Does your child learn best by solving puzzles or taking quizzes or playing adventure games? Seek software that focuses on these styles.
  • Exchanges: Will the retailer allow exchanges or returns? How hard is it to return a product? If the program you purchase does not suit your requirements or won't run on your computer, you want to exchange the program for one that will meet your requirements.
  • Age of user: Will your young children or high school student be using the software? You'll want the software to be age-appropriate for the user. Sponge Bob Squarepants can teach your young child typing skills, but you probably could use a more advanced learn to type software!
  • In the market for programs by topic or by title? If you know the name of the software you're looking for, then you've likely already done a little research. But, if the only thing you know is you want it to help you  learn Spanish, then take your time examining the specific learning techniques.

Considering these points will help ensure that you and your kids will make the selection that will optimize the learning experience and the usage of your product.
